Interview with Rebekah Tolley-Georgiou on 'PIVOTAL: Digitalism'

The British Art Fair | Saatchi Gallery
Alex Leith: How would you describe the scope of digital art?

Rebekah Tolley-Georgiou: Digital art is incredibly broad, spanning from digital paintings and drawings to interactive art and digital performances. It's a field that continues to grow rapidly as new technologies emerge, offering endless possibilities for creativity.

Alex Leith: What inspired the name 'PIVOTAL: Digitalism' for the show?

Rebekah Tolley-Georgiou: The term 'Pivotal' came up often in early discussions. We see 2024 as a key year for digital art, which has its roots in the post-modern revolution and now significantly impacts art and culture, much like the Impressionists did in their time.

Alex Leith: What challenges do you face curating a digital art show?

Rebekah Tolley-Georgiou: Unlike traditional art, digital art requires complex technical setups. We're lucky to partner with Creative Technology and Muse Frame to create immersive experiences and beautifully framed digital works. MEADOW will enhance our AR displays, bringing digital sculptures to life.

Alex Leith: Does technology's rapid evolution affect digital artists?

Rebekah Tolley-Georgiou: Absolutely. Digital artists must continuously update their skills with new tools and software. While some digital art may quickly seem dated, the core artistic vision remains impactful.

Alex Leith: Can you highlight some artists featured in the show?

Rebekah Tolley-Georgiou: Cecilie Waagner Falkenstrøm uses AI and blockchain to create interactive works, while Jeremy Kidd blends traditional and digital techniques, bridging the gap between classic and contemporary digital art.

Alex Leith: How do artists view AI: threat or opportunity?

Rebekah Tolley-Georgiou: Opinions vary greatly. Some artists reject AI, others embrace it as a tool for innovation.

Alex Leith: Is digital art a wise investment?

Rebekah Tolley-Georgiou: Digital art is gaining traction as an investment. With its growing recognition, now is an excellent time for collectors to explore this vibrant field.
